A Day in the Bay.Discover the Heart of St Brelade

Oyster Box exterior in the sunshine

From golden sands and clear waters to historic landmarks, coastal paths and places to eat, St Brelade's Bay has everything you need for a relaxed day by the sea.

There are some places in Jersey where you can spend an entire day without needing to go very far. St Brelade’s Bay is one of them.

From its golden sands and clear waters to historic landmarks, coastal paths, watersports, little beach shops and places to eat, the bay has everything you need for a relaxed day by the sea. And, of course, Oyster Box sits right at the heart of it.

Start with a walk along the bay

Begin your day with a stroll along St Brelade’s beautiful sandy beach. At low tide, the bay opens up into a wide stretch of sand, while at high tide the water reaches much closer to the promenade.

Follow the coastline towards the western end of the bay, where you’ll find St Brelade’s Church and the Fisherman’s Chapel. Set slightly above the beach, the churchyard offers a different perspective across the bay and is a lovely place to pause and take in the view.

For those who want to explore a little further, continue along the coastal path towards Ouaisné. The route winds through woodland and around the headland, offering glimpses of the sea through the trees and beautiful views back across St Brelade’s Bay.

It’s a wonderful way to experience the coastline away from the beach itself, with the landscape changing from sandy shore to woodland, rocky headlands and open sea.

Discover a little Jersey history

St Brelade’s Bay isn’t just beautiful – it has a remarkable history.

The Parish Church of St Brelade dates back to the medieval period, while the nearby Fisherman’s Chapel contains some of Jersey’s most remarkable medieval wall paintings. The church and chapel sit within a peaceful setting overlooking the bay, making them well worth a visit even if you’re simply passing through.

The churchyard is also home to one of Jersey’s historic perquages. These ancient sanctuary paths traditionally provided a route from a parish church to the coast, allowing people accused of certain offences to leave the island and seek sanctuary. The St Brelade perquage runs from the church towards the sea, and its route provides another fascinating glimpse into the island’s medieval past.

Further along the coastline is La Cotte de St Brelade, an important prehistoric archaeological site where evidence of human activity stretches back hundreds of thousands of years.

Take your time exploring, or simply enjoy the views and the feeling of being somewhere that has been part of Jersey life for centuries.

Take to the water

When the sun is shining, there’s no better place to be than on the water.

During the summer months, St Brelade’s Bay is a hub of beach activity, with watersports available from the beach. Hire a kayak and explore the coastline from the water, or enjoy one of the inflatable rides for a little more excitement.

The clear waters and sheltered setting make the bay a wonderful place to get out on the water and see the coastline from a completely different perspective.

Whether you’re looking for something active or simply want to float along and enjoy the sunshine, there’s plenty of opportunity to make the most of Jersey’s seaside setting.

Take a dip

Of course, you don’t need a kayak to enjoy the sea.

St Brelade’s clear waters are inviting at any time of year – if you’re brave enough.

In summer, take a leisurely swim or spend a little longer in the water, cooling off between stretches of sunshine on the beach. For the more adventurous, the bay can also be the setting for a bracing winter dip, when the sea takes on a very different character.

There’s something particularly refreshing about stepping out of the water onto the warm sand on a summer’s day, or wrapping up in a towel after a cold-water swim when the seasons change.

Just remember to check local conditions and swim safely.

Relax on the beach or in the sauna

Sometimes the best part of a day at the seaside is doing absolutely nothing.

Bring your own towel or picnic blanket, find a patch of sand and settle in for a few hours. In the summer months, sun loungers are also available to hire if you’d rather make yourself comfortable and stay a little longer.

Read a book, enjoy a picnic, watch the boats on the water or simply listen to the sea.

For a different experience, book into the seaside sauna and warm up with a view of the waves.

With the tide constantly changing the shape and character of the bay, there’s always something different to look out at.

Enjoy an ice cream

No day at the seaside is complete without an ice cream.

St Brelade’s Bay has a handful of small beach shops and kiosks where you can pick up an ice cream, cold drink or a few seaside essentials.

They’re also handy for browsing for a little souvenir to take home – whether that’s something to remind you of your day at the beach or a small gift from Jersey.

Take your ice cream for a walk along the promenade, sit on the beach and watch the world go by, or enjoy it as you make your way towards your next stop.

Stop for lunch by the sea

After a morning exploring, make your way back towards the beach and settle in at Oyster Box.

With the bay just beyond the windows, it’s the perfect place to take your time over lunch. Enjoy fresh Jersey seafood, local produce and a glass of something chilled while watching the tide come in.

And if oysters are your thing, there’s no better place to enjoy a Jersey oyster than beside the water.

If you’ve spent the morning walking, swimming or exploring the coastline, there’s every reason to linger over lunch and make the most of the view.

Stay for sunset

There’s no need for the day to end when the sun starts to go down.

Return to Oyster Box for an afternoon drink or dinner and watch the bay change as the light fades. The same coastline that looked bright and lively during the day takes on a completely different character in the evening.

It’s one of the pleasures of St Brelade’s Bay: you don’t have to rush from one attraction to the next.

Take a walk. Explore some history. Get out on the water. Swim in the sea. Enjoy an ice cream. Sit on the beach. Eat something good.

And make a day of it.
